Get Involved

Iona was formed over 45 years ago by concerned neighbors who simply wanted to look out for one another.

We continue that spirit today by bringing together thousands of people each year in a community that speaks up for our older neighbors, builds friendships across generations, and celebrates the amazing possibilities of aging.

Here’s a few ways to get involved with us:

Volunteer

Volunteers are at the heart of Iona’s work. We rely on several hundred volunteers every year to visit participants at our two adult day health centers, support administrative tasks, and so much more!

Opportunities are available for individuals of all ages and student interns. Please view our list of current volunteer opportunities below and fill out an application to get started!

The Age Well/Live Well Volunteer Program provides companionship for older adults living alone, those aging with disabilities, and in-home respite support for family caregivers of aging individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD).

Do you have special skills, training, or talent that you'd love to share with others, especially older adults? Do you feel passionate about your work and love passing on what you know?

If you're friendly and enjoy teaching and sharing with others, then you might be a great fit as a volunteer at one of our adult day health centers.

Fill out your Iona Volunteer application today and help your older neighbors!

Please send completed applications or questions to Iona’s Volunteer Program Manager, Tania Sechriest, at [email protected]. If you haven’t heard back within a week of submitting your application, please call (202) 895-9419.

Advocate

Individuals and organizations with a passion for working for better, more equitable services for older adults in the District of Columbia are invited to get involved with Iona’s citywide advocacy groups: the DC Coalition on Long Term Care and Citizens Advisory Group. Open to activists, health care providers, and concerned community members, these groups provide opportunities to:

  • Add your voice to the stories of others who are personally impacted by government policies. We also want to hear from your neighbors and friends who may have stories to share.
  • Help write DC regulations and testify before the DC City Council.
  • Expand existing services, programs, and policies and create new ones.

Iona hosts two advocacy groups:

The DC Coalition on Long Term Care is committed to expanding and improving the quality of the District’s long-term care programs so that low-income residents with chronic care and/or disability needs can age in the community safely and with dignity. The Coalition meets online on the second Wednesday of the month from 12:00 to 2:00 PM. To get involved, call (202) 895-9448 for more information. Visit its website here.

Iona's Citizens Advisory Group (CAG) is devoted to discussing critical issues affecting older adults and caregivers living in Wards 3 and 8 and the impact of public policy on the quality of life of older adults. Members include local aging-in-place Villages, citizen advocacy initiatives, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, local congregations, and respected activists. The Ward 3 CAG meets online on the second Tuesday of each month from 3:00 – 4:30 PM, while the Ward 8 CAG meets online on the last Monday of each month from 2:30 –3:30 PM. Call (202) 895-9448 for more information.

Attend an Event

There are many ways to learn about Iona—and attending an event is a great way to get started!

From virtual and in-person tours to special arts, education, and socialization events, there’s plenty of ways to discover how we help older adults and caregivers and how you can get involved.
