Advocacy
Transportation Initiatives
With studies showing that older adults who stop driving next turn most frequently to walking, and a strong interest in making the District a pedestrian friendly city, Iona’s transportation advocacy issues are now focused on pedestrians. Out of this focus, Iona has been instrumental in the formation of Connecticut Avenue Pedestrian Action, as a pilot for the city in making the city streets safe for pedestrians.

Connecticut Avenue Pedestrian Action (CAPA)
The recently formed Connecticut Avenue Pedestrian Action (CAPA) is a group of pedestrian activists who are parent leaders of Murch and Oyster Elementary Schools Safe Routes to School projects, ANC 3C, 3F, and 3G Commissioners, members of Chevy Chase, Cleveland Park, and Woodley Park Citizen Associations, Ward Three Vision, DC AARP, Murch and Oyster Elementary Schools Safe Routes to School parent leadership, and staff support from Iona Senior Services and Coalition for Smarter Growth. It has raised money to hire a Traffic Engineering Consulting Firm to assist them in making the case to the DC Council, the Mayor, and the Department of Transportation that the city needs to design and then implement a pedestrian plan for Connecticut Avenue to reduce pedestrian fatalities and injuries and improve the pedestrian environment along this corridor from Calvert Street to Western Avenue. The study site is located in upper Northwest, Washington.

Thank you for your support of one of Washington’s best small charities! Your donation to Iona makes a difference to your neighbors, their families and our whole community.
Just consider that it just takes $100 to deliver excellent, compassionate one-on-one counseling to a senior who is all alone and vulnerable because of illness, disability or grief. That one hour of counseling is the difference between a life that continues to be lived in independence, or a life lived in unnecessary and expensive institutionalization.
Your $1,000 gift means the world to a family facing the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. Your contribution to Iona helps them receive case management, support groups and participation in Iona’s award winning Adult Day Health, Wellness and Arts Center. Their loved one receives person-centered care during the day with exercise, art therapy, fellowship and stimulation while they receive a much needed respite from the responsibilities of caregiving.

"I take working here as a learning experience. Seniors have a lot to offer. They like to share their life experiences and I like to listen. The learning experience comes from listening to their stories."
